Milly Molly Mandy

Today is World Book Day so I wanted to do something special around books.

For Miss Belle, Milly Molly Mandy immediately suggested itself. For those who haven't read Milly Molly Mandy these are old fashioned, very sweet, chapter books about a little girl who lives in a little white cottage with a thatched roof along with her Mother, Father, Grandfather, Grandmother, Uncle and Auntie. Miss Belle loves these books, so do I, but we hadn't read them for a while.

I had a bit of a hunt around the internet for some ideas and in the process found this website with useful ideas about Milly Molly Mandy and a whole host more. In addition, the owner of this site pointed me to Last in Line where there are more Milly Molly Mandy resources.

For World Book Day, Miss Belle decided to dress in Milly Molly Mandy's colours of pink and white.

The Last in Line printables include an A4 sized map of Milly Molly Mandy's village. Miss Belle coloured and  I laminated this. Now, Miss Belle can use the Milly Molly Mandy disc to plot movements in the village.

Yesterday, we read the chapter when Milly Molly Mandy writes letters. There was a copywork sheet to go with this but much more exciting, this has set off a little flurry of letter writing. I am so pleased to see this and hope it continues.

Today, we've read about Milly Molly Mandy running errands. The printables provided pictures of the appropriate items and we also played a memory game around this. We didn't do much writing for this chapter apart from a very short piece of copy work. If letters hadn't taken over, we would have worked on a little description but letters were to the fore and I didn't want to ruin this. Perhaps for another day.

Milly Molly Mandy spends a penny is one of the best chapters-entrepreneurial and such fun. Milly Molly Mandy was given one old penny and manages to use it to grow mustard and cress, learn to knit, make a cake, buy sweets and save to buy a duck. Wish I could make a penny go so far-ideal for teaching about inflation as well as "old" money.

Milly Molly Mandy made a cake so we make some cup cakes-two dozen which was a new concept and seemed  to fit well with the 1920s theme. Of course, we did the measuring in Imperial and used pink icing.

There was some discussion about whether instead of just growing cress next, it would be good to buy a duck. I'm a bit less sure about a duck walking round the garden-cress seems much tamer.

There are so many more chapters with ideas which lend themselves to enjoyable learning. I'm sure that the keeping shop chapter will be popular although we might have to leave old money and yards of fabric in favour of more modern currency and measures.

  1. I've never read Milly Molly Mandy but my grandma had an audio tape of some of the stories which I used to love when I was little. Must keep an eye out for the books! Your activities sound great and the cakes look yummy!

  2. If you enjoyed the tapes then you will love the books. The illustrations are fun-black and white and capturing 1920s life-well, I think they do, I wasn't around then!
