Lone Star Learning-Target the Question

Photobucket
Lone Star Learning produces an on-line daily maths add-on programme, Target the Question. This is produced for grades 1 to 7 (equivalent to UK years 2-8) and is available in both English and Spanish. This costs $59.99 for a one year license.

Middle Son has been using the grade 7 (UK equivalent to year 8) version of Target the Question.

The programme is divided into weeks. Each week has a stem with a different question for each day. The idea is that this is used in addition to the usual maths curriculum. The questions are thought out so that different aspects of maths are revised. So far, Middle Son has covered percentages, arithmetic, probability, highest common factors and square numbers. So far, none of the questions has been, mathematically, outwith his previous maths, and we use a UK programme which may well cover different topics. However, the questions are designed in an interesting way and can be quite challenging. They have certainly proved useful revision.

and the answer.

The question takes up to about 10 minutes a day although often less. Being word problems they do take a little time to read, assimilate and work out which parts of the data are and are not relevant.

Target the Question does use cents and dollars which have not proved any difficulty as well as Imperial measurements. We have only covered SI units to date but Middle Son is of an age when he needs to be able to manipulate Imperial measurements so this has been a positive learning point.

We did find one mistake in an answer and contacted Lone Star about this. They e-mailed back to let us know that as a result they had rectified this.

We plan to continue using this useful adjunct as it is such a helpful method of keeping mathematical concepts fresh in the mind.

My only concern about Target the Question is the cost which is a more than I would pay for an add-on. I would seriously consider buying the product for another year if the price were lower.
