Back to Homeschool: lunches for every day of the week

Welcome to day 2 of the Back to Homeschool blog hop.

Back to Homeschool Blog Hop

Yesterday, I wrote about our overview. Today, I'm writing about a very practical issue: lunches.

Home educated children don't have school lunches provided-that is the negative. The positive is that they don't need day after day of packed lunches. Today, I'm pulling together some lunch ideas which work well for the home educating family. I can be confident about this because I've used them! My aim for lunch is that it is quick to prepare, nutritious and economical.

  • Soup is a real staple here. We make our own soup which costs a fraction of the amount of preprepared soups. Our favourites are lentil, leek and potato, tomato and split pea and bacon. We serve soup with grated cheese and bread.
  • Pitta bread with humus. This is quick and easy. Here we have small, value pittas which are ideal size for children.
  • Baked beans or sardines on toast.
  • Boiled egg or scrambled egg.
  • Crumpets or English muffins with cheese.
  • Tuna mayonnaise sandwiches. If the children have grown cress, we add this.
  • Left overs.
We always serve these up with fruit.

What do you serve for lunch?

  1. Our lunches tend to be simple. Most days a wrap of some sort but once a week a hot meal, and once a week something brand new. Sometimes we'll just do crackers and cheese with fruit. :) Nothing fancy. Dinners are a bit harder to plan out...

    1. Wraps are something that we rarely do and a lunch that we should try more often.

  2. My first pick was always leftovers but since moving here we don't have as much leftovers. I cook smaller meals because refrigerator space is limited. I agree with soup. I used your lentil recipe, any other easy ones. Sardines are a favourite of my kids. Thanks

    1. That is interesting. I've always wondered when reading about bulk cooking as I would struggle to store the ingredients probably a function of smaller fridges.

  3. Oh, these are some good ideas! We do quesadillas and sandwiches also, along with plain popcorn and some fruit.

    1. My children love popcorn but I think the temptation to make it rather too sweet would be great!

  4. Sandwiches happen most days with some dinner leftovers in the mix. When winter hits, though, I like to have some soup at least a few times a week.

  5. I like those ideas, Sarah! I forgot about split pea soup and I think I have some split peas in my pantry!

My son has just discovered that he LOVES pita bread. I love it as well---it is great for hot sandwiches or cold ones!
